A win for Black over Maroon officially kicked off the Swim & Dive Bulldogs’ 2019-20 season Wednesday night at the Michael D. Holland Aquatic Center on campus.
The annual intrasquad meet saw the Black team defeat the Maroon team 179 to 141 in a format that presented mixed competition in the one-meter dive, the 50-yard races for all strokes, and the two sprint relays.
HARD WORK and FUN
“This meet is a great opportunity for the kids to have fun and a chance for Bob (Lieber, diving coach) and me to see where the kids are,” said Jared Kaminski, Bulldogs’ Head Coach, noting the kids have been working really hard over the last month and needed some fun.
Coach Kaminski says the results don’t matter at this point in the season. “Every swimmer and diver has a path to get better,” he said. “This meet is one of the first steps on that personal and important path. We want them to see that working hard in practice impacts their racing, the team’s goals, and their individual ones.”
Swimmers competed in 50-yard freestyle, butterfly, backstroke, and breaststroke races. They also started and ended the meet with mixed relays (i.e., 200-yard medley relay to start and the 200-yard freestyle relay to finish). Six divers started the meet off with six rounds of the one-meter dive, and some even competed (and did well) in the swimming.
The night also saw the introduction of the team’s new competition suits and white swim caps.
